I am tired of the filter sock on the sump.

Is there anything I can put on the intake side of the sump other than this sock?

Something such as rubble, etc...

I am not a big fan of the sock as it is, and I believe it is culprit of my nitrates being a little high. I know they can be cleaned, but its too cold to go outside and use the hose, and I don't want it in my washing machine.

I just rinse mine using the kitchen or bathroom sink. Works good for me. How often are you cleaning it?

I am not normally this way, but laziness in this hobby will only lead to problems, just rinse the socks in the sink, sorry if that was too harsh.

I'm not big on using the washer for one either, I'm pretty darn picky about that sort of thing. BUT, I did run mine with bleach when I washed the filter sock, and then ran it on rinse with bleach after as well.

I use my machine on sterilize with bleach(pure bleach, no scent or color safe kinds), then re-wash with Prime(about 3 capfuls) from Seachem 2 times, then once with just a rinse, then let sit till they are needed, never had any problems. Oh I rinse all filters in the sink very well before putting in the machine( to get the big nasty crap off). They come out very clean, could pass for new. It is a pain, and time consuming(I have a bunch, so I am not doing this every week), but I think it is definitely worth the effort, if you want to keep a clean tank, a good clean-up crew is a plus too. Sorry for being blunt in my last post, sometimes you got to get dirty to do the job right.
