Predators for a new setup?

As I've mentioned before, I'm in the process of rebuilding my tank setup. I had been planning on housing a couple fancy goldfish, but I'm reconsidering (big shock, huh?). The tank is (or will be) a 44-gallon tall (picture a 22" square with one corner knocked off, ~24" high) plus a 20-gallon sump/filter with 2 Eheim 1048 pumps to circulate the water. Since the sump is so large, there may be a section set aside to raise feeder-somethings. I'd expect about 50-55-gallons total water vollume.

I'd like to keep one or more larger fish rather than a lot of smaller fish which is what I was aiming for with the goldfish. I'm willing to go freshwater or brackish and would like to get a predator of some kind. Right now I'm leaning toward a Green Spotted Puffer with some edible tank mates. I'd like a "freshwater" Moray, but I don't think the tank is big enough. Do you have any other suggestions? Unusual is always a plus.

For most big predatory fish a 44g tall will be too small.
Yeah, it's just big enough to taunt me with some of the larger fish but doesn't quite have the swimming room. Unfortunately, I don't have the room for something bigger at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestion. They look like they have a bit of attitude, but I'm not sure I want a schooling fish. As many times as I've changed my mind though, it's hard to say. I'll certainly keep them in mind.

Anyone want to donate about 5 large tanks and a spare room or two?

I would highly suggest going with 2 Nandus nandus, or 3 Butis Butis, both are very interesting, very good at camo, and the butis have extremely odd swiming behavior, they are also both ambush predators. With the nandus you will probbably need some plants, fake or live....i reccomend live....I would reccomend Water sprite (a very good beginner plant) if you have enough light. And the butis will be happy with driftwood plants or whatever you provide to hide on. Also, I have a school of Exodons and they are a very cool schooling fish, but I dont know if you could provide adequite "territory" for them all so they dont kill each other.

I would look at a native sunfish.

Easy to keep and very predatory.

I have a pumpkinseed in a 20 gallon.

Thanks for the great suggestions. The Nandus Nandus is hard to find info on, but it looks like a lot of fun. I like the idea of keeping natives like sunfish or perch. I suppose if they ever got too big I could throw them in a frying pan.

Hey, I'm kidding! (or am I?)
