Prices of simple glass canopies. Oh Brother!

I'm looking at a 40 gallon breeder and have located one at a reasonable price of $75. Now prepare yourself for this: The price for a glass canopy to fit over it is $25.

You would think the price for the two pieces of rectangular glass plus plastic backing and flexible ribbing wouldn't cost 1/3 of the actual tank in question.

Price divided by "what you get" ratio seems to be very high for this item. The only thing whose ratio is larger is perhaps those "specialized" bioballs that proffer great surface area for bacterial colonization.

Lowest ratio? It's got to be aquaclear filters!!!
 
We have a local chain store called the Hobby Lobby that will cut glass of any thickness to your desired measurements. Try a store like that. Has to be cheaper.
 
you might be able to find a plastic or acrylic at a hardware store and use aquarium sealant to attach two pices of scrap glass together.

I worked at a Hobby Lobby-was in management. Yes, they will cut glass but if it is too thick they may not be able to do it. I would advise to call ahead and make sure that the framing department is able to do it and has someone on staff who could do it. Not everyone is great at cutting glass. FWIW
 
i just use a sheet of plexiglass on my tanks. if its too thin it will bow, but i just flip mine over every couple of days. its not a big deal. if you get thicker stuff it won't bow as much.

just look up glass shops in the yellow pages. I just went to a glass store and paid $16 for a cover for my 29 gallon. I think that was a rip off as well, as I have found a cheaper glass shop. Try an Ace or something like that. Do a little looking around.....
 
I just had the guys at a local plastic shop cut me some plexi for my 90 gal.... $18
NEVER buy glass from the LFS...


PS plexi is a lot better to work with; light weight, and youd be hard pressed to brake it..
 
for a 200+ gallon tank i paid 70 for glass tops si i find that cheap
