Thanks, everyone! I requested a water report, and they sent me a 2005 report. They don't keep updated reports and are aparently quite lazy. I got transfered all over the place before getting someone who knew what water quality was. I live in a rural area. I have switched to RO and spring water.
The first time, I didn't realize until after I had put the water in the tank that there was still ammonia in it, and that my conditioner left the ammonia behind.
"Now here comes the kicker...
Let us jump beyond ionized(NH3)/deionized(NH4) ammonia...
Do you know that PH and temp directly affect the toxicity of NH3?
The lower the PH/temp the less toxic the NH3, this is a variable factor depending on must how much (ppm) NH3 is present."
Yes, I did figure that out, but I have never understood exactly what it means. Thanks for the chart, it is less confusing than some of the others I have found. ph is between 6.9-7.1 By the chart my ammonia toxicity is between .020 and .025 as of last night. Ammonia has been on the way down, but I havn't tested this morning.
I don't really understand exactly what the percent means. Both of those are in the yellow range. I couldn't find in the article exactly what type of fish the toxicity levels were for.
My test kit has 2 bottles of drops, so I think that it means it is salicylate. I'm not sure, though.
I am especially using the RO water so that I will have a lower ph.
My most recent test for GH/Kh (in German units) are
29 gallon: GH=10 KH=about 3
10 gallon: GH=5 KH=2
I realize that is really unstable, but I don't totally understand. I have been monitoring the ph because the GH/KH is so unstable. The ph has been very consistent. I have been testing the ph, ammonia, nitrite, etc. at least once per day. The 29 gallon has trace amounts of nitrite.
Both tanks have lots of plants, so I think that is helping. I did get the aquaclear filter in so it is also on the 29 gallon. (Both are there right now, but I think that the marineland one isn't working as well as it used to.)
So 29 filers are: Marineland bio-wheel 200gph and aquaclear 300gph with ceramic things.
The 10 gallon has a Marineland bio-wheel (I think 50gph)
I have been doing 10-25% water changes pretty much every day to try and keep my fish comfortable. Their behavior and appearance has been normal. I am feeding greatly reduced amounts. I have added the recomended dose of prime.
Thanks everyone, any more advice would be much appreciated! Thank you for your time!
UPDATE: as of this morning toxicity
29 gallon: .012 (in white area now)
10 gallon: .024ish (still in yellow area)
will probably change water tonight because I have to work in the morning.
