Hi Friends !

Just wanted some advice and guidance on priming the EHEIM 2217. What is the proper and efficient way to do this.

Is it ok if I fill the cannister with water, then connect the tubes and switch on the filter ?

Kindly guide me friends !
Thanks and Regards
Kush

I dont know about that filter in specific, but I do run a canister filter.

The way that I start it every time I clean it out or whatnot is to fill it most the way with tank water, approx. 9/10ths or so full, connect all the hoses then run the pump for about 15 seconds, this will draw the water into the suction line and push some out into the pressure. After that 15 seconds, turn the filter off, let it "burp" (in other words, air will go out of one of the lines into the water, mine goes out the suction line) and it will fill the canister the rest of the way.

Sometimes i have to repeat this process 2 or 3 times in order to get all of the air out of the canister and lines, the goal is to get all air out because your filter will run MUCH quiter when you do this.

Hope this helps.

If it's a new tank, yes - remove any plastic bags, insert spacer, coarse>fine media (rinsed first, it gets a bit dusty during transport) w/ pad between layers, carbon on top (or sponges per directions, assuming you got one w/ some sort of media/sponge kit), add top spacer, water, seal (careful not to nick the big O-ring), hook up hoses, open valves and power it up. It should noisily belch a bunch of air for a little while and then run silently for the rest of your life.

For an established tank (or filter media), do the same as above, but treat water as needed with Prime or whatever conditioner you use.

Many people like to drill a small hole a little below the water line on the filter's intake tube so that in the unfortunate event of a profound filter failure, hose disconnect or whatever, the filter will only drain the tank down to the hole in the intake tube (assuming your sparabar's highest hole is not way below the water line in the tank). I have done this and I keep a little poster putty on the back rim of the tank to seal said hole during water changes (so the filter doesn't suck in any air).

I have the Eheim 2217 also. I followed the instructions in the owners manual & it works perfect every time. If this is a brand new filter, do you have the quick disconnects installed? If not, I recommend buying them as it makes cleaning the filter easier.

Once the filter is assembled with the media and NO water in it, place it under the tank, it must be below water level. Connect intake hose & place in tank. Then suck on pressure hose & while filter is filling with water, connect pressure hose to spray bar. Once filter has completely filled with water & air has been expelled, plug in the filter.

If you have the quick disconnects, you won't have to suck on the pressure hose to prime it again.

I find the filter easier to prime when there is no water in it.

Hi there !

Thanks for the replies and for helping me, friends.

I'm a little confused here, Just wanted to request you to kindly advice on what is the "Pressure hose" - is it the intake hose or the out-flow hose ?
