I'm too far away to help, but I wanted to bring your attention to the group Operation Noble Foster. It's a volunteer group designed to care for the animals of servicepeople on duty. They might be able to help.
Good luck with your animals and in iraq. I happen to have a partly-siamese cat named Tibby myself 
I have to say that reading this thread and the fact that your sweet kitty is 16 years old made me cry. I just lost my 10 year old to cancer last month and my oldest is 16 also. So tragically sad to leave an old kitty (and the fish too). I'm in Colorado, but if I weren't so far away, I'd be happy to help you out. I pray that it will all work out just fine and you can stay in touch with your "foster home". Thank you so much for your service to our wonderful country (BECAUSE of people like YOU)!! Since I am former miltary, I am bumping this thread along. Least I can do.
Can't help with the pets. (Too new to fish keeping for that, and cats are not allowed in the house due to serious allergies).
