Problem: Can't keep cat away from my tank.

I had a similar problem with my sister's cat 4 years ago.

I just put a sticky mat right in front of the tank.

If none available use doublesided tape on a peice of cardboard until he cat learns.
Make sure not to use any comercial grade stuff or you can really hurt ur beloved (snickers, I don't hate cats, just dislike my sister's for trying to kill my fishes).
Safe to say, lesson learned.

i say to fix it, you should swat, or spray the cat every time he/she jumps up there

I think what i would do would be to cover all areas that he could knock out (pipes, cables etc.) and add a frame around the base of the tank so he cant get to the sealent.

Declawing is inhumane. It's an incredibly painful process for the cats. Imagine having your own fingernails ripped out---yes, they're under anesthesia for the surgery, but that wears off a lot faster than the pain. And even after the pain wears off, the cat is forever at a disadvantage if it has to defend itself. You have to be very careful not to let it outside---EVER. My cats are declawed because they came that way when we adopted them. I'll readily admit that there are some nice things about it, but I would NEVER do that to an animal. If you really want a declawed cat, adopt one that's already declawed.

I really don't understand all of the comments that suggest harm to the cat. (I realize that some of them are jokes, but it sure sounds like some of them aren't.) How can people take such good care of their fish, and then be so heartless to their other pets? When you bring an animal into your life, you're making a commitment to care for it. If you can't handle that, then find it a new home. Maiming the animal for your own convenience is way beyond irresponsible pet ownership. It's deeply wrong. If you find yourself considering it, you should reconsider pet ownership altogether.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I just had to speak up.

You gota learn to decipher tongue and cheek comments from serious ones.

How about you learn the basics to english reading comprehension. Since you were not sure if I was serious or not. The first thing you should have done was ask.

Your assumption of it being serious has now put you in an awkward position and forced me to be in a position to fire back at you for this unwarranted soap box rant you are making.

A simple " You are not serious are you" would have been a better approach...My answer would have been "No".

Seriously develop a sense of humor and not take threads so seriously with posts that are in general fun and humor.

Everyone here loves Marine fish tanks = we love animals. Why the hell would we in all seriousness want to harm anything besides Aptasia?

We wouldn't. I believe most folks who dislike animals wouldn't spend the money we do on these fish tanks either.

Use some common sense before you go off on someone. And at the least have enough respect to address me in a better tone than to go off on some tangent without even bothering to ask me if I was serious.

If I replied with yah im serious, you could educate me on why its not good. But to imply I am some animal cruelty type individual with my comment is misplaced. Imply= you didn't directly say it but that is the message you are sending.

Now that we got the ugly post out of the way... No I wouldn't declaw a cat in seriousness. And I very much doubt anyone here would purposely be cruel to a cat or there own. There are exceptions but I doubt they would make a serious post in here about doing such a thing or face a wall of flames and requests for a ban.

Don't assume anything till you ask in here. Forums are horrible place to really express sometimes. And people can misinterpret written words easily. Hence why you should have tactfully addressed this vs go on a rant.

I really dont like replying to this kind of post but you put me in the position to do so. If you bothered reading most of my responses you would have seen I was really having fun with my comments. Not being serious at all.\

PS> I anticipated some sensitivity to the comment but nothing to warrant this rant. And I was kidding 100%.

BACK ON TOPIC:

The advise to put a chair just for the cat seems the best one.... because he wouldn't have to pounce up to look and try to get a foothold to stay up there. Get rid of his reason to pounce... A front row seat to entertainment.

The foam idea I was thinking the same thing..a mess waiting to happen or kitty eating something he shouldn't.

Well, I figured I'd post back with my results. I left the chair in front of the tank and he was still clawing at the sealant. I have a 44 gallon pentagon shaped tank which has two strips of sealant right up front, so I was still having problems. I then placed strips of double sided tape on the floor about a foot from the base of the tank. Problem solved. He took one jump, landed on the tape, and hasn't jumped since. I did leave the chair there too, just outside the tape on the floor, to give him a place to watch. He likes to sit in the chair with me and watch the new Valentini Puffer I added this past Friday :D
