Problem with German Blue Ram pair

What do you keep and what are your parameters?

Neons, glolights, blue tetras, oto's, and a betta. No not all in one tank, I have two tanks. The GBR's were in a tank with the 5 blues.

I got some GBR from a breeder on another forum - they are doing great and I have my first spawn in the jar to hatch out. If you want to contact him let me know - VERY healthy and well cared for and well priced. I have read about the problems many people have had w/GBR's but these have been great.

HTH,

Glad yours are doing well! I'll think about the offer. Thank you.

What kind of water conditions are you dealing with? I have medium to hard water, so I don't know if I really should even be keeping them. I kind of feel like maybe that was part of the problem.

post your water parameters, if you can

Sorry, forgot that part. I used API strip tests, which don't test for ammonia.

NO3: 0-20
NO2: 0
pH: 6.5-7.0
kh: 120
gh: 180

I use straight tap water - ph around 7.8 and med. hardness (around 180 best I can tell). If your other fish are doing well I would suspect poor stock or stressed stock from the store. I have about 100 wigglers in a hatch out jar and another spawn from the other pair I am getting ready to pull tonight. If you decide to get more let me know and I will get you his information. It was only $12 for the pair - pretty good deal and they are beautiful fish.

HTH,

Wow $12 isn't bad at all. I'm assuming it would be plus shipping too. I paid $6.50 each from the store, but if they don't last it's a total waste. Did your breeder friend sell as a proven pair? Where do the ship from? You and I have similar water parameters so I don't think it was something I did. I should go back to the store and see if the other ones survived... Thanks again.

Video of my tanks. You can see the female GBR towards the end. Her mouth is white and there's a spot below her eyes.

Next time, use salt first, and then praziquantel if you can get some and the salt didn't work.

Not necessarily. You want to use a small amount (your not making the water brackish). I use kitchen salt. I wouldn't use more than 2 tsp per gallon with rams. I use even less in my tanks, with african cichlids that actually use salt. Try adding very little at first, and if the symptoms don't reside, add a little more. Make sure it isn't iodized though.
