I had my H.O.T magnum set up on my QT tank with the normal filter unit in it.

I decided to do some water polishing on my community tank.. so I went to set up the micron filter

I put it together and turned it on... it spit all the water out of the filter that I had dumped in there to prime it... but it will not suck any new water from the tank

the water level is fine... I have the thing put together correctly (I have checked 500 times in the manual)

motor seems to be working... it sprays when i dump water in...but has no suction???

why??!

Of course with out having the unit in my techy hands I have to guess, but if the motor is working and pumping out water like normal just not taking water in the problem is 98% solved already and its just a simple hydraulics problem. I would start by checking your O-ring seals on your intake tube connection points and lid o-ring seal. If your sucking in air at the intake or lid the air is going to replace water and no water will be sucked in. So find the air leak. Also make sure you have the center exhaust tube facing the right direction so the tiny thin tube that rides on is faces the center curve portion of the D shape filter basket not the flat portion, also that it is not clogged.

x2... seems like it almost has to be an air leak.

I am looking for leaks... it doesnt seem to have any

the only thing I can think of is I am missing the top O-Ring for the exaust tube... but I swear it was working like that a week ago-- I have never had that o-ring in place

maybe its just not sealing up now for some reason?

can someone please explain to me how the suction on these even works?

Did the orange gasket slide out? I've forgoten to put it back after it has fallen out during a cleaning. It should be in the top of the lid, but may have dropped out of place before it got clamped down. Try putting the medium basket back in a seeing how it behaves.

suction, pump pressure, siphoning, its all about the difference in pressure almost like electricity where you have a potential difference between one part of the circuit and another and a short or open disrupts flow, the same thing happens with a hydraulic circuit. You motor is pumping so you have potential difference but somewhere in the hydraulic circuit there is a brake (leak) or short (bypass). Either that missing o-ring is responsible or you have something else missing or assembled wrong inside the pump, one of the two large flat round rubber washers perhaps is misplaced. Make sure you look carefully at the placement of each part in every illustration as you assemble each part, or find another Hot Mag that's working and compare the difference in assembly as this is usually human error. Either that or something has become worn, bent, or cracked.
