most of the ammonia locking chemicals add an extra hydrogen to NH3 turning it into the less harmful NH4.
most of our tests test total ammonia.
the probem with the ammo locking chemicals is dtermining how much ammonia to lock up..ammonia tests work great for that.

So if I got Prime my API test would be the same if ammonia was present, no difference it would just be safer ammonia?
I have such low readings of ammonia barely above 0 right now as I think i'm almost at the end of a cycle however I need to go out and get a water conditioner as soon as weather permits.

the api tests for total ammonia ..so yes you would show ammonia when you may have ammonium.

it should still show up on the ammonia test kit but the test kit showed a big reduction in level after the ammo-lock dosing.

What kind of test kit? The normal ones will pick up ammonium, but some types only pick up ammonia, which would cause the reading to drop if you added ammo-lock.
Ammo-lock doesn't completely remove ammonia like Ace and some others.

mine is a test tube kit where drops of reagent are added. I read the booklet and it says that it measures both nh3 and nh4. It has a chart with ph over ammonia(ppm) to show how much is nh3.

The only thing that will remove ammonia from your tank is water changes, or an ammonia removing material such as ammo chips. All conditioners that detoxify ammonia do just that, change it into a non toxic form yet the ammonia is left available for your biological filter to consume, as previously stated. They will NOT remove ammonia from your tank. All test kits that test total ammonia will still register ammonia in your tank. Your best bet would be to get an ammo alert and place in the tank if you are using one of the ammonia detoxifying conditioners. It only checks for the harmful form of ammonia with the added plus that you only have to look at it instead of pulling out a test kit. Personally I keep one in every tank I have at all times even tho they are all cycled.

Some products I have had experience with that detoxify ammonia are Ammo-Lock and Prime. The only product I can think of atm that will completely remove ammonia is ammo-chips.
