Pros and Cons of Activated Carbon?

Perfect! Thanks for all your help folks, and no worries about the threadjack, Mike. We all have to learn! Okay, AC out unless I want to remove nasties.

Cons are that you never know when you're going to replace them before they leech out all the poisons back into the tank.
This will not happen in an aquarium setting. I don't use carbon in my tanks, but if you want to make an informed decision regarding carbon, you should know that the "toxin dump" is a myth.

For more information read RTR's article on chemical filtration.

Replace the carbon with Matrix or something way more benificial to your bio's. Carbon is expensive and disposable. Matrix, while expensive, has a surface area that will surpass the carbon and will last forever.
Place the Matrix in a media bag and simply drop it in your filter.

You dont have to use Matrix either. Go look for media typically used in canister filters and simply find one that suits your fancy. Eheim Ehfimech, Bio Balls, Bio Rings...whatever you want...just ditch the carbon.
