Pros and cons of CA live black worms? How much?

IMO, the CA blackworm is one of the best foods for fish (but not for African Cichlids). Worms are very fattening, so use only as a treat. Treat it like a good steak, You may love eatting it, but not a good exclusive diet.

The leeches only feed on the worms and will die if no worms are available.

Hmm okay thanks for all the responses. I personally have no problems keeping the worms in my fridge, however, my boyfriend draws a line at live black worms in the fridge. Looks like I'll be getting frozen probably, I like it better than freeze dried.

Well looks like I won't be doing frozen, too expensive to spend $100+ at one point in time or to spend $40+ a month for live. I might try to cultivate my own foods.. looking more into that.

@tanker, what would you advise I feed my peacock eel in addition to worms? He will only eat frozen worms, not frozen brine/mysis shrimp, or anything else.

You can try "chopped" earth worms.

From my experience they only eat live and frozen food. I have not had an eel for many years now, but when I did, it ate frozen blood worms, glass worms, and chopped Krill. I do not like frozen tubiflex, it come out like "slop".

lol my girlfriend freaked out when she first saw my container of worms on fridge door in the butter compartment with my sticks of butter. Tell him to man up I haven't had any escape yet.

Go freeze dried...so much easier even than the frozen. It is the same product...just much less to deal with. Tried em all! LOL

Give D.A.N.'s freeze dried blackworms a try, he was kind enough to send me a free sample and all my fish have loved them! I think if you soak them, suck them up with a turkey baster and spot feed your eels, bichirs, etc. they might prefer that. Otherwise it's quite possible top/middle feeding fish will eat most of them (if you have any) or your filter will suck them up before they get eaten. One cool thing about them is that if you tear off a square and press them against the glass, they stay on there for a bit and you can watch the fish eat them right there in front of you :) I love watching my kuhli loaches do this.

If you have an LFS that sells live worms, get them once in a while as a treat, because they absolutely love them...but I keep it strictly as a treat. I thought about raising some in a spare 10 gallon tank, the problem with this is that tanks like this tend to get a lot of other bugs (like planaria, ostracods, springtails, etc.) without fish to eat them.

You can stick a cube of the freeze-dried ones right on the glass at any level of the tank (an added benefit) ;)
