hey whats up i bought a protein scimmer going on 2 weeks ago this sunday and it has been in my take sense then to, my tank has been going for about a year now and everthing is good. the problem is that the protein scimmer is'nt collecting anything in the cap just condensation i haven't had to dump it. i don't no if that means my tank is clean or it's just not working any help would be nice thanks.

What kind of skimmer do you have. I know with my prizm I have to empty the collection cup at least 2 times a week. That's when it's about 1/4 full.

About once a month I take the whole thing apart and rinse well with hot tap water. Maybe take your's apart and rinse real good and try again.

I have 7 fish in my 55 and my skimmer works great, thank God. Then again, I have only had a prizm.

We're having the same problem. Had the protien skimmer running about a month and it's collected nothing.

It's an Aquarium Systems Maxi-Jet 1200 running in a 65 gal tank.

Anyone have any ideas??? I've taken it apart, cleaned it, reassembled it, etc. It seems to be circulating correctly, and the venturi is working as I see it in action, but alas, no protien being collected. ??

Thanks to any advice!

Cheers,
Daniel

Usually, one can adjust the position of the outflow or collection cup to optimize the skimmate. Is there anything like that on yours?

Alas, after reading more and more online about the filter I bought (upon recommendation of the aquatics shop) it seems it only works a small percentage of the time. I even found "SeaClone FAQ" postings telling time and time again what a piece of crap it is, and a "SeaClone Alteration Guide" describing the ideas people have to alter the thing so that it *kinda* works.

Aw well, back to the drawing board. I guess I'll do research BEFORE I buy my next piece of equipment. ;)

Cheers,
Daniel

See if you can take the Seaclone back to your LFS. Tell them that it doesn't seem to collect anything and you'd like to exchange for a different skimmer. You might be lucky enough that they'll let you do it. If you are going to get a Red Sea Prizm model (the only other one my not so hot LFS actually carries) try to get a Prizm Pro, as the Prizm is only good for maybe 30 gallons, not the 100 gallons it claims to be good for.

If they won't exchange, gripe about them selling equipment that doesn't work and be a pain about it. ;) Sometimes that will make places actually worry about losing business from selling low quality products.

Seaclones are one of the worst skimmers out there, but it seems to be one of the most frequently carried by fish stores because it's cheap.

Here is a list of what's good and what's not in skimmers, though I'd rate the CPR Bak Pak 2 a bit higher if you get the ones that come with a Maxi-jet instead of a Rio.
