Protein skimmer issue

I have a 46 gallon reef, with LR, Clam, and some fish. The reef has a hang on, red sea prism skimmer. THe skimmer is letting a film out onto the top of the water, and it is all over the entire surface of the water. The film is light brown, and it bubbley. Has anyone had one of these skimmers, and know how to make it work well. Thanks

That's just scum that the skimmer is not removing. If you can get a surface skimming attachment, or direct a powerhead toward the surface, that will help to get rid of it.
