I was looking on line and found this skimmer and was wondering if it is a decent product for a first timer. I am running a Emporrer 280 on my tank now so not sure if I even need one but if I did this one would help being so cheap. LEE''S PET PRODUCTS - PROTEIN SKIMMER 16 1/8"

Thank You

I'd definitely pass on that one. Don't be afraid to invest in a decent skimmer. What size is the tank?

If you want a HOB skimmer I'd go with an AquaC Remora or maybe one of these if money is an issue. http://www.aquacave.com/reef-octopus-bh-100-br-hang-on-back-protein-skimmer-495.html
If you can't afford that right now, then just go without a skimmer and add more LR and stay on top of your water changes. Some Purigen in the filter would help, as well. The cheap skimmers aren't going to do much of anything so don't even waste your money on them.

I just got the coralife model that was on sale at marinedepot. It's not the greatest skimmer, but it's decent and has done the job so far. It's better than what i started with and I can tell the difference already. I thin I paid $180 for the 220g model, which is pretty cheap.

Not usually a big fan of coralife, but money is an issue right now and I had no choice as my sump had broke (and it had an integrated skimmer)

Careful when adjusting the super skimmers. IME, it takes quite a while for them to fully adjust. I do it tiny bits at a time every 15-20 minutes or so. I've adjusted them many times to where i thought was perfect, stared at it for 5 minutes or so to make sure the level doesnt move, and come back 20 minutes later to find it overflowing on the floor...

Hah!

Yup, noticed this as well. Touchy little buggers.
