protein skimmers are they needed?

i would suggest you get a skimmer probley a remora they are simple to set up and they are effective. when you are just starting out the skimmer does help and makes the whole system a bit more forgiving down the road skimmers can be taken off depending on what you wish to keep.
As for people going nuts on filteration there is a reason. the only sort of fileration i really like is a sump LR system with or without a skimmer.or even LR with just heads. cansisters, biowheels bioballs and other such things are nitrate factories.
