if your tank is measuring nitrItes, then it's not properly cycled. do you have a nitrAte reading? this is what you should be looking for, as it is a sign that bacteria are getting rid of the toxic ammonia and nitrItes.
how long has the tank been set up? how did you cycle it?
the flashing and rubbing against the substrate really does sound like parasites... i'm glad you're going ahead with the treatment.
