Pumice in cichlid tank??

Hey everyone.

Wasnt sure where to post this but its for my cichlid aquarium.

I have a HUGE box full of pumice rock that i wanted to use in my cichlid aquarium. Theres only a teensy problem..... it floats. I've heard boiling it and then placing it in cool water will make it sink. Is this true? Also, does anyone have any expierence with pumice in an aquarium.

Yeah I've read that somewhere too. If you already have the stone try it. If it works, great! If it doesn't work your not really out anything if you already have the rock.
 
something you may not have thought of .... pumice is EXTREMELY abrasive. fish rubbing up against it accidentally, in the normal course of their swimming, are going to get scratched up pretty severely. i wouldn't use it in any of my tanks.
 
Like feather rock(found in garden shops some some cichlid people carve caves in it and use it in they're tanks) pumice can be sharp but also like feather rock it's soft. You can use a regular round river rock to rub it smooth. I heve holey rock in my Malawi tank a few of the pieces are pretty jagged, I've never had any problems with it though.
 
The pumice is actually not too had. It is way less abrasive than my lava rock. Thanks for the concern though.

Cook it in the oven at 400 degress and as soon as you take it out submerse it in some cold water. Works great for feather rock dont see why it wont for Pumice.
