Purigen...Who uses it/regeneration?

Don't hate da playa, hate da game.

'Sides, I owe a lot to those guys, in more ways than one. Married a much younger woman who's dedicated her life to her own little Ponce de Leon like adventure in medicine. She's always been beautiful, but now...she's Frankenbarbie.

She ceases to age and I get to drink home brew and keep fishies. Works fer me.

I was initially concerned with the effect that it would have relative to cycling. If it extracts ammonia, nitrates and such what would happen if I pulled it out for a few days to regenerate? Would the tank begin cycling? I've never tested the question because I always maintain a few unused spares to replace the ones that might be temporarily removed, but it still seemed a possibility for someone who might buy just one to check it out.

Rumor has it that there are people who actually have the inner fortitude to own but a single tank...but I'm pretty sure that they're all doctors and they just keep it in their waiting room.
It doesn't physically remove ammonia, nitrites or nitrates (nitrogenous compounds). What it does is remove nitrogenous organics from the water before they break down into nitrogenous compounds. It has no effect on bacterial populations at all.

I have some for emergencies, used it once, but I wouldn't use it on a cycling tank. After that there should be enough bacteria to keep the tank stable.

I love Purigen, keeps water crystal clear and chemistry nice and stable. No problems with interrupting the cycle here

Eeeeew, can I have your used filter media. I'll send ya a few pre-paid mailers and you can just drop'em in the mail instead of the trash

Seriously though, it's not at all hard to regen and it's as good as new when you're done. Throw it away? I'm still reconditioning slate bottom aquariums and you're throwing Purigen away?

If you really must, at least check out Ken's and save yourself a few ducats.

+100000000

RAOK that stuff..in bulk.lol.. It's amazing stuff, I just have been unsure about how strong it might actually be. I hate testing chemicals on my fish...

I'm not really positive, D's in Chemistry, but other than being absorptive I don't believe that it functions as a chemical per sei, as in reacts with. Other than that I use a lot of Seachem products and have a hard time believing that they'd market anything that would harm your fish if used as directed.

Now trusting a manufacturer like that might be the equivalent of thinking that my government can actually make something better rather than worse...but sometimes ya just gotta drop a hit of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and have hope, er..a ...wait a minute,...what I meant to say was eh..yeah, you just gotta have hope - forget the Kesey reference and stay in your own movie.

Just found this...guess the packaging of mine is a bit old...

Re: Purigen recharge process
Thanks for the post. On the revised instructions for regenerating Purigen, it is no longer necessary to soak the media in a buffer solution. The instructions are as follows:

Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard™, Prime®, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well.

As long as you rinse the media well after the dechlorination step and there is no sign of residual chlorine/bleach, the Purigen should be ready for use. We are currently working on changing the instructions on the website and any labels printed in the future will have that step omitted.

I hope this helps and let us know if you have any additional questions. Have a good day!
