Purigen

Well an update on the Purigen.

It took me about a month to get my Nitrates down to 20 ppm after being lax on WCs..The past few weeks I'd check my water 24 hrs after a WC and would get the reading of 20 ppm, from that time to the day of the WC readings went up to 30 ppm every week since.

24 hrs after doing a WC and adding a pack of Purigen my Nitrates were at 10 ppm..I'll update when I do my next check on Saturday.

i have been contemplating using purigen myself....in place of carbon. can anyone offer suggestions? the organics is what caught my eye.
how is it recharged by rinsing in bleach?

You soak it in bleach then soak it in a strong dechlorinator solution. Then it is recharged and for freshwater use, it needs to have the pH brought down from the higher than 12 pH it will be at from the bleach using a buffer though seachem told me that viniger is fine. It will then look new and be ready for use. More detailed instructions are in the manual that comes with the packet.

I've always re generated purigen by soaking it in a 1:1 bleach/water mix overnite. and then soak it in fresh water with declhorinater (Prime) 1 Tbsp per 8oz. I've never used any type of buffer...Hmm.

I have been using Purigen for about a year and my water has never looked better. I still do my weekly water changes like before, but the water was never this clear.

Okay I did another test,a day short of a week, tomorrow will be WC day.

the nitrates went back up to 30 ppm within the week, same as without the purigen.

The filter media is pretty dirty, could use a new one.Think I've rinsed this one to the maximum. The purigen bag also has some discoloration, like it was catching what by passed the fiber,so that might be attributing to the higher level because its not getting full filtration thru the purigen bag.

Guess i'll know better next week after I rinse the purigen bag and put in new fiber bag.

Don't worry about the bacteria,I always keep a scrap piece of fiber in the bottom of the filter.
