i saw these fish labled as "Purple neon tetras" except that they looked NOTHING like a neon tetra, and everything like a glowlight tetra. the difference was that the "glow" parts were a purpley-blue. are these fish dyed, or just selectively bred? would they school with normal glowlight tetras, or are they too different?

Well, there is a sort of "purply" tetra, Inpaichthys kerri, sometimes commonly called kerri tetra, sometimes called blue emperor or purple emperor tetra. I have 7 in a 29 gallon tank and there seems to be conflicting info about whether or not they school or shoal, but mine are definitely happier in a group. They have a lot of energy & personality and they're gentle, so I would think they'd get along great with your glowlights.

Yup, and here's some info on it:

Thanks for the welcome! I've been lurking awhile and really like this website. I'm not exactly new to the hobby, but been away from it for a long time. Used to keep dwarf seahorses, but I'm more of a reptille keeper & have a reputation in my town for keeping cold blooded creatures, so when some people here needed to get rid of their 29 gallon tank, they gave it to me. So now I'm back into it and totally addicted.

that's not it.

it looks exactly identical to a normal red glowlight tetra

except that the red "glow" stripe is pruple-blue. the fish is semi-transparent with a purple stripe that glows in the light.

Did you ask the owners of the fish? The flourescence fades when lights are out so the fish should look quite pale when the lights are first turned on. If this is the case, it's probably a natural color, if not, they're probably dyed. I've never heard of this color of glo-lites, then again, there's lots of stuff I've never heard of.

no, they had a black light on the fish and they glowed really bright blue/purple
