Putting NON-driftwood in a tank

The problem with softwoods is they decompose faster than hard woods, not to mention their low density makes them harder to sink. They will also leach tannins and pitch longer than hardwoods, even after proper boiling and bleach bath. Google it.

not all softwoods decompose at a faster rate. cypress and cedars actually rot fairly slowly.
the diff between hardwood and soft wood is in cellular structure.

you may find some softwood more dense than some hard woods and often quit a bit harder.

the problem with 'softwood' is the sap weathering does need to take place and aged wood should be used.

btw the same is true for some hardwoods as they may also contain substances that may harm fish.

BTW I don't need to google it (BS Forestry WSU)
