PVC Black Pipe?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if its possible to use the Black PVC Plastic Pipe you see in hardware stores in an Aquarium safely, and if so, what could be used to stick it together if i wanted to make 3 or 4 pipes stick together in different directions?

Sorry if you this is in the wrong section or has been asked before.
 
yes they are aquarium safe because i use them in my tank too and i dont have any problems yet. aquarium silicon is the best way to "glue" them together. just follow the directions on the tube.
 
Yeah, black pvc is safe....but just be sure you're not buying the ABS stuff which looks similar. ABS piping is poisonous, I believe.

Certainly! ABS PVC it's all fine. None of it is poisonous.

Not sure why you'd want to use silicone to join the pieces?!? Whatever you buy; PVC or ABS just make sure you buy the correct glue at the same store for gluing it together.
 
If you use the appropriate PVC glue (it'll say so on the label) with the black PVC pipe, the bond will be much stronger than silicone. If you follow the directions for curing, then rinse it well after the curing time, you shouldn't have any problems related to the glue. PVC glue is very common on tanks that have hard plumbed drain lines and/or return lines.
 
once the glue has cured it is safe.. I always flush the glued sections before putting them in service in my tank.

I wouldnt even bother trying to silicone pipes together.
just use the correct sovent glue. let it dry.. flush it out, and use it...

Never heard of ABS being toxic..
 
Just a quick follow up questions, where is the best place to buy rigid black pvc?
 
Plumbing supply stores. They will also have the correct solvent/glue for your application. Usually sold in 10' lengths. You can also get it at many hardware stores. A 10' piece is usually cheaper than a 3 ft' piece as you are not paying for the cutting (or "custom" sizing).
