Slate is a great alternative to pvc...i have to agree, it looks soooooooooo much more natural.

However, if you choose to stay with pvc, then 2-2.5 inches seems about right. But dont take my word for it, I've never owned jewels.

The heck with making it look natural, you could paint them emerald green and go for a Mario theme. :p:

instead of/in addition to painting them, you can smear them all over with some aquarium safe silicone, and then cover them in sand. just make sure the sand is dry. gravel might work too, though it would be a little more work and silicone to egt it to stick properly.

what if i used both? with moss which is green? slate stacked on the pvc? i want to get rid of the fake driftwood in my tank but i have 3 catfish to think of. each catfish have their home in or under the fdrift wood, so what im thinking is a couple pieces of plexie 3 inch high maybe 5 inchs long 6 inchs wide because they stay in smaller places with the lights on now. just need something for the upside down cat it stays inside a piece of the fdriftwood? this is how the tank looked when i bought it with the cats and angel in it already 100 bucks for tank stand eheim 2026 filter fish decorations ect. trying to make the tank more natural for whats in it.

. . . or leave it unpainted, and go for an “industrial” look.
