Hello All:

I'm in the process of plumbing from my newly drilled holes in a 45 gal glass tank to a sump. I have a 1 1/2" bulkhead for the drain and 1" bulkhead for the return. I have heard that sometimes there is a slurping noise when the water drains through the prefilter box and into the drain. I have about 7 1/4" clearance behind the tank.

One LFS told me to just use a 90 degree elbow turning down and followed by straight pvc to the sump. Said it will be fine that way. Another LFS told me that there will be battles with air bubbles that way - he always uses a Tee short piece coming out from the bulkhead... then leaving the top of the Tee open so that air can help gravity take the water down the pvc without air pockets getting in the way. It sounds like a good idea, except that after I add a threaded bushing out of the bulkead... use a short length of pvc pipe to cement to the Tee, it extends more than the alloted 7 1/4" behind the tank.

Does anyone have thoughts as to what kind of slurping noise and/or fighting with air bubles I will have if I just use a 90 degree elbow and take my pvc pipe down to the sump without the air vent method of the Tee? Is this the right forum for this type of question?

Thank you kindly.

I wouldn't really want the opening--too much chance for water to splash and spill if there is a back up. I would go with the straightest line you can--the 90 immediately outside the corner followed by a long straight line should provide enough movement to prevent a problem with air bubbles. Bubbles are really a problem when the water is moving slowly.

Brian - the drain is through a bulkhead in the back glass, at the top near the corner. I need to plumb down to my sump underneath the tank.

Debi - I had an opportunity to see the open T in operation today. Its very nice - acts like a muffler. I'm told that water will not splash as long as the open end is above the water line. It does indeed add to the quietness.... and, if still not quiet enough, the LFS showed me how you can put an end cap over the open end of the T, and just drill a small hole in the end cap. He showed me by simply putting his hand over the open end of the T, and the noise reduced immediately as he did so.

In conclusion, I've decided to go with the T open at top above the water line, and see how it turns out when my tank is setup.

Thanks to both of you.

Who is Debi?

I didn't understand that you had the opening of the T extend above the water line. That works very well--pretty sure RTR uses a similar arrangement for his overflows.

Orion Girl:
I have absolutely NO IDEA who Debi is!!!! I have been up very late for the better part of a week trying to learn this hobby. Sorry. Appreciate your comments however. I'm sure I'll have your name (or nick) down next time!
