Here's my 10 gal tank:

Filter- Aqua clear 20 (with sponge, carbon, and bio-max running)

Heating- Tronic 50 watt (77-80 degrees)

CO2- DIY

Lighting- about 2 watts per gallon

Substrate- onyx sand

Plants- Rotala Indica
Anubius Nana
Moneywort
Hairgrass
Wisteria

All kept trimed leaving plenty of swimming space

Decor- One piece of drift wood almost splits the tank in half diagnoly
2 small pieces of white honeycomb rock

Here's my question:

Is this a suitable enviornment for a school of pygmy corydoras? If so how many? And finally do they eat algae at all or will I need to use an oto or some srimp to keep that under control?

Yes that sounds perfect for pygmies. They will greatly appreciate the onyx sand!

Pymgies do not eat algae. You will have to feed them just like any other cory.

As for how many...it depends. What else will be in the tank? If it were to be just the cories or the cories and a betta, you can keep about 10 of them (I had 9, plus some other fish...but I'm great with water changes). With the cories, they really like company:) I wouldn' get fewer than 5.

Otos will eat soft algaes, but again, you will have to supplement their diet with algae wafers and fresh veggies.

Thanks that sounds great I will probably throw in some shimp to help with the algae load. Maybe tetras or some threadfin rainbowfish to keep them company

Threadfins are too active for a 10g tank, IME & IMO. None of the rainbowfish (except perhaps the oddball varieties you'll never get your hands on) are suitable for a tank of that size. So, I'd say stick with neons/harlequins/glowlights etc.

Also, if you've got other fish in there, I'd bump the pygmies down to 5-6.

Haha Maybe my pygmy cories are weird, but they eat little bits of the hair algae in my tank....I've watched them. Not sure If they just like it but cant digest it, but I swear its the weirdest thing.

Ok. thanks for the info I wasn't sure about the threadfins thanks.

Congrats on going with the Pygmys, they are great little guys. I Currently have a shoal of 18 of them in a 55 gallon. Other suggestions for a 10 gal if you wanted would be Harlequin rasboras, cardinals, or maybe find something a bit more exotic. And, just to make sure, are they the real pygmys or another species called Dainty cories, Pygmys have a soild black strip down their lateral line, while dainties are kind of peppered. It really doesn't make much different, both are very small for cories, just many fish wholesalers sell dainties to petstores as pygmy cories, though this is the time of year that true pygmies start showing up again.

They are true pygmys I brought in pictures and compared.

What a great idea! Awesome. I've used my phone to look up infomation about a fish before, but a picture--it's so simple, so...so...Geeenius!
