Python owners, how to dechlorinate?

Normally, you need to add just enough dechlor to treat the new water you add. For some reason, some conditioners (e.g., Prime) suggest you dose for the volume of the entire tank, not just the new water.

When I use Amquel to treat partial water changes that go straight from the tap to my tank, I dose for the amount of the change, plus a little bit more in case the water utility went crazy with the chloramines.

Jim

This doesn't really pertain to this thread per se, but I saw this in the thread and had to pipe up:

When Ich rears its ugly head everyone says to add salt to the water. Why does this help? Is salt posionous to Ich?

In a word, yes. Salt is poisonous to ich above the correct dosage. Good site on ich: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/ich.shtml

... Salt irritates the fish and causes it to produce a thicker layer of slime coat to help repel the Ich.

You may well be correct there. Salt does irritate the fish, and as a result most likely makes the fish produce a thicker slime coat. This isn't the primary reason for salt treaments of ich, though.

I mispoke there. The Ich that is already infecting the fish is not affected by salt treatment. The free swimming Ich does have an aversion to salt treatment.

Sorry for the confusion.
