Python too easy?

We use one at work, but since our sink is a friggin long way from some of the tanks, we have approx. 150' of hose hooked up to the sucker. At any rate, I learned a valuable lesson in checking the strainer in the sink it drains into. That sink is a typical laundry-room sink, so it holds about 20 gallons of water, and the drain flows water quickly, so the first time I used it I thought nothing of it. I checked the strainer once early on, but realizing that it was fine, I just kept at it for a while. I remembered about 20 minutes later (after having gone through about another 4 or 5 tanks) and ran back to see the sink just barely beginning to spill over onto the concrete. Ironically, one of our other associates did something similar earlier that week, but instead of catching it just as it was going over, she caught it when there was already 30+ gallons of water on the floor... :-P

My tank is actually quite close to a sink, 20 feet or less so it's really handy.

Here is a question though. When just doing water changes and not vacuuming, should you suck the water from the bottom, the top, the middle, or does it even matter?

I realize that the python is quicker but how the hell do you dechlorinate ? do you just add some conditioner as its filling up? and its also tough to maintain steady water temp from the faucet. This just makes me nervous for when i get my 75 and cant age my water in buckets anymore?

When not vacuuming it doesn't really matter.... I more often than not set my siphon in the bottom of the tank so that the end of it is just resting on the gravel and go sit down at the computer, while keeping a keen eye/ear out for the bucket getting close to being full. (I'm actually in the process of siphoning my 55 right now... when I let each bucket of fresh water cure with amquel + I come browse around and post something. :-P)

Prime says to add enough to treat the entire volume of the tank, regardless of how much water is being replaced. That's what I do. I don't worry about the possibility of tap water conditioner getting too concenrated, because I do 50% water changes at least twice a week, sometimes even 4 times a week if my tank or fish are having issues. The Python makes those frequent water changes a breeze!

i half dose my conditinoer (prime) because there isnt much chlorine in there to begin with.. most of it if nto all gets evaporated through the python ...

my sink got clogged once and started to overflow and i didnt eralize until my neighbor rang the doorbell and said the ceiling was dripping.

gassing off is hastened by aeration, so some people use an airstone in their "sitting water" container. with more surface area, it is also faster. otherwise, at least 12 hours is a safe call.

Anyway, this is almost a non-issue now that most municipal water supplies add chloramines to their water, precisely because they are more stable than chlorine.

First water spillage: I turn the shut off valve WITHOUT reading the instructions. Next thing I know, I have a water fall in the kitchen.

Second water spillage: The stupid sink clogs up and I don't realise it until once again, I have a HUGE waterfall in my kitchen.

Third water spillage: Forgot all about the water turned on to fill up my 55G. That lead to the biggest water fall I've ever seen in the living room.

I'm sure there will be more to come. I have 2 tanks that are located in bed rooms in the back of my house. When I go to empty them, I have to run and flip the switch to fill, run back to the room to make sure the python doesn't fall out of the tank, fill up the 10G tanks, when close to the top, I have to dart all the way to the kitchen to shut off the water. Accident waiting to happen? LOL
