Yesterday I bought the 50' Python Water Change System at Petsmart. As you can see in my sig, I have two 55 gal tanks. One of them is down in my basement (which is why I needed the 50' version). However, my other tank is a mere 15 feet or so from the kitchen sink. Petsmart sells the hose connectors for around 5 bucks each. I was thinking of making another (shorter) hose to use when changing my tank upstairs (the 50' hose is a monster!). The tubing seems like standard 5/8". Can I just buy some clear 5/8" tubing from Home Depot or do I need to buy the (much more) expensive stuff at the LFS? My only concern is some sort of chemical in the tubing.

Also, my Python didn't come with an instruction book. I'm going to email them and ask for one, but in the meantime, does anyone have any tips or hints on using it? I think I got the gist of it down. You do have to run water into your sink the whole time you are siphoning out, right?

Thanks!

You can buy clear hose from home depot and use that. As long as it's labeled for pottable water use then you don't need to worry about it being toxic.

I don't really use the faucet to syphon the water out of my tank. I find that it uses too much water if I leave it running. What I do is start the syphon on the inlet end (the big tube) by filling it with water and then turning it upside down and then let the water drain out into the yard or sink. As long as the outlet is lower than the water inlet the water will syphon out. If this is not possible then you will have to use the faucet and let it run.

That's correct. The faucet has some plastic ring at its lower end. In the lower position, it sucks water, in the upper position, it delivers water. Just use the stop valve near the siphon tube while you go to the water outlet in order to change the position.

I use the adapter to start the siphon, then I shut the water off.
And yes, the clear stuff from the hardware store is ok:)
The only problem with it is that it isnt as flexible, or it kinks easier.
