OK, so a couple days ago I was high bid on an auction and had a max bid of almost double my high bid. 30 seconds before the close of the auction someone bid $.50 over my max bid without even a proxy bid from me. My question is, who has access(if anyone) to what is my max bid?
I understand it is an auction and that is no big deal to not win, but it seems odd that someone bid $18.50 over my bid to take the auction and nullify any proxy bidding on my part. It could just be a coincidence but what are chances that it was luck on their part? Thanks in advance for any input/info.

It might be like eBay where the bid you enter is the max and it makes the lowest bid to possibly win. Say your bid was $10 and someone else enters $15. It would only raise their bid to $10.50, because that is high enough to win. So it would look like they just barely beat your bid even though they were willing to go $5 higher than your bid.

The thing is I had a bid of $22.50. If they would have bid $39.50, AB would have proxy bid for me to $40.00 since that was my max bid. They came in at $40.50, Just over my max bid, which is supposed to be private. Any bid under that would have proxied me to high bidder. I've seen five bids( on other auctions) get proxied by the original bidder until a bid came in over their max. Yet that didn't happen, it was one bid that came in over my max.

Well I think it depends on how the winning bidder bids. If they come in with one bid, it probably only shows up once. However if they try a couple of times and are outbid by the proxy bids, then multiple bids will show up.

So if the winning bidder had come in and bid $30 first, then $35 and finally $45 it would show up as 3 bids(2 proxy bids from you and the final one from the winning bidder. However if the winning bidder comes in at $45, it would show up as just one bid(at 40.50).

OK. It just seems odd to me that a person would double a high bid out of the blue, but that's just how my mind works(when it works). Thanks.

Many folks that bid on AB don't bid until the last minute (Snipe the auction)

When I bid I may "fish" with a few small bids then at the last minute place my max bid. Why start a bidding war when you can just wait and get it for less...

The seller has the option to select bid increments...like 1.00 or .50. It's nothing shady it happens all the time.

I'm a sniper too. In fact... if there are a bunch of "nibblers" I typically don't bid at all. Sterling 1 is correct. Why start driving the price up 1 week early?

I usually wait till the end of an auction to bid (snipe).. That way if the other people want it and want the auction bad. They dont have time to bid it up to a high amount.. And bid at the last minute usually gets it for you cheaper..
