QT Fish Tomorrow?

If you're only going to qt for a few days you might as well just add them into the main tank. The odds of catching a problem in that amount of time are pretty slim and you're going to inflict a lot more stress moving them several times in a few days. In order to be effective, you should QT a bare minimum of 2 weeks. I do a strict 4 week QT for any new fish for my SW tank, and once everything is on a central filter system, for my FW as well.

Sorry if I sounded impatient at all, I'm really not. I'm more interested at this point in making sure that my fish and main tank stay healthy. I will then be keeping them in there for at least two weeks.

But if you have a quarantine tank, why don't you want to use it? ' a couple of days' is not enough to observe to make sure the fish isn't infected with something. If you have a quarantine tank, why risk getting your main tank infected with whatever the new fish may be carrying.

I'm not afraid to use it at all, I am quite willing to use it, and is why i bought it. I was just worried that my fish might be too big for it. I will just have to do daily water changes to keep the tank as healthy as I can. I would much rather do water changes on this tank than have to take down my main tank and disinfect it.

What kind of fish, how many, and is the 30g set up like a normal tank? My point is, even if they're 10 african cichlids, they'll most likely be somewhere around 1 and 2 inches, and having them in a 30g for a couple of weeks won't be much of a problem, and most likely, what you're getting won't be 10 africans. Just think, almost all fish on the market are sold as juveniles, mostly between 3/4" and 2", but there are some you can get bigger (3-6"), which are far more rare compared to the small fish in the stores.

I wasn't trying to get smart or anything, I'm just making the point that 3 day QT is pretty much the same as no QT.

if you don't qt for atleast a month there is not much point to qt.

I qt for 4-6 weeks.

ich may take time to manifest ..sometimes 28 days to become full blown.
it is reason enough to qt the fish for 4 weeks.

what kind of fish are you bringing in that you can't qt in a 30 for 4 weeks.?

So 4 weeks it is then. That link to the article was nice, I should've gone straight to that.

So the fish are juvenile, and since the writer of that article uses a 10g, I feel fairly comfortable with my 30g. It's only two young fish, no biggie right? Thanks for your help.

you won't regret it and you'll establish a great practice .you'll find if there is an outbreak it is much easier to deal with it in a qt set up.

Yeah I had to treat my 150 with ich one time....QT from then on out.

even if there's no other fish in the big tank, its better to go ahead and QT.. there's plenty of bad things that can get into the gravel (like ich for example) so its better to treat it in a separate tank so it wont get into the gravel.

Ya, I just got them, and they're absolutely tiny! I might have to keep one of them in there longer so he can grow bigger as to not get eaten by its tankmates. Thanks again for all of your advice!
