qt tank

Well you want to keep it as simple as possible. Mine is a 15 gallon with a bare bottom and a sponge filter heater and a strip light and about 5 or 6 inches of pvc pipe for the fish to hide etc. I keep a sponge in my main tank so that it will be ready upon need . IMO easy cleaning and few places to hide are idea in a hospital/qt tank. I hope this is what you're getting at?

All you need is some container that can hold a sufficient amount of water for a couple of weeks observation. A rubbermaid container will work fine and is very cheap. Heat it, add some source of filtration and possibly a light source so you can observe the fish. Feed it accordingly and do appropriate water changes.

Because a fish can carry a disease and still appear healthy for awhile. Stress will normally weaken a fish's immune system and a move to a new home is often a stress on fish. So if a fish looks good in qt for a couple of weeks, you should be sfae to add him to a tank. With the cost of marine fish, adding a sick fish to your tank could wipe out your whole tank and cost you a fortune.

Some fish stores will claim to quarantine the fish for you. But check out their setup. The fish should be in qt for at least a couple of weeks. And the qt should not be attached to a central sump system in which all the fish share the same water.

I have a 14 gal hex as a qt. I have one of those wisper cheap filters, one decoration, not even a half inch of sand, and a new heater. I ended up leaving a few damsels in it 'cause it is in me bedroom and I didn't like it to just sit. The damsels are gone now 'cause I burned the corner of my bedroom by not keeping up on the salt creep, so it crept down my heater and melted it. (idiot)
It's about a year old and I haven't used it for a QT in nine months. Well now I have to restock my tank so I want to use it again.....actually I have been QT some of my live rock-I have a mantis I am trying to catch-so there is now two five lb pieces. Now if I put a puffer in there and he has an ich break out can I treat with copper?
I know I have to take those pieces of rock out, but won't treating many deseases kill all the beneficial bacteria, then causing a spike, then killing the fish??
