I've finally taken the advice of those on this board and set up a quarantine/hospital tank. I took some rock from my 29 gallon, and filled it with water from the tank that was already doing well. I also put the filter media for the QT tank in the in the filter well for the 29 gallon and let it stay there for a few hours to pick up some of the bacteria. I have two questions.

First, having used the rock/water/filter media out of the other tank that was already doing well, is there a cycle that has to take place?

Second, when I buy new fish, how long should I put them in the QT tank before I add them to the main tank?

Thanks for all your help!

yes there might be a cycle. you will need to add ammonia to cycle the tank or keep it doing. i have sponges on the intake of my filters. i use that and some floss from my filter. that way i dont have to keep the tank cycled.

as for how long.... i go 2 weeks some times longer. i know people who leave fish in qt for a month or more.
