Iam sick and tired of aquabid. I've ordered a few diffrent fish off of it and have come to learn its a complete pain in the rear. In town we have a few pretty good LFS but they dont carry the discus i like. Most of the discus kept are wild caught heckles, pigeon bloods etc. These fish are nice, but a lot of them have quite a bit of "peppering" and arent as bright as some of the other cross strains that i've seen. I know alot of people try to steer away from the cross strains but I see no problem with them. The problem that i have been having is finding quality discus like the ones i have been talking about other than aquabid. Can someone send a reccomendation my way about a nice place to buy. Thanks alot for your time and help in advance!

In Houston, go visit Gulf Coast Discus

Go see Dan at www.Gulf Coast Discus He is located in Sugarland, on the SW side of town.

You can visit and pick out your fish in person. He breeds and also gets from other breeders. I got all my fish from him. Fair prices, lovely fish, and if you pick your own, you know what you are getting.

And, it is good to have locally raised fish used to the local water, and a breeder to call for questions.

I just moved to Houston as well. I know of 2 discus breeders in Houston and am looking foreward to visting their places once I get my aquarium set up. One is Gulf Coast Discus and the other is a guy named walter, but he does not have a website. I went to fishrus earlier this week to order my aquarium, and there were some pretty nice discus there. The guy who owns the store said that he gets them from a breeder in Canada.

When you look at fish, be sure to look for good shape, good gills, not just color and price. It is better to deal with someone who really knows fish, who has spent many years involved with discus.

You want to deal with someone who can help you learn, for it can be difficult at the start, you've spent a lot of money and it is easy to panic.

You might also want to get in touch with Aggie_67 in the SimplyDiscus or DAAH forums, he has babies most of the time, not sure if any larger fish for sale though.
