quarantine tank

i have an extra 10g and wanted to make that a qt.
how do i get it started?
what should i keep in it? shrimp, snails?

i have no experience with qt's, help would be much appreciated!

normally qts are empty so you can keep sick fish in it when needed...

what do i use to cycle it?
i thought i read somewhere that i should keep something in there all the time.

what i do is run a sponge filter in one of my main tanks. when i need to use the Q tank, i take the sponge filter and put it in there and presto, instant cycled Q tank.
