I have a 15 gallon tank which I have been using as a quarantine tank for the last 4 weeks or so, until today. I had 2 danios in quarantine, one with mouth fungus and another with a mystery disease that may have been lymphocystis, which attacked the gills and mouth, so it was not able to feed. Anyway, I had to euthanise the second danio last night as it was very sick and was wasting away :sad

(After reading lots of information and advice from this forum I chose the 'clove oil' method. Not exactly instant, but I hope it was humane)
The other danio has recovered so I have now put it back in the main tank.

What I want to know is how can I keep the quarantine tank cycled? Really I want it ready so that I can treat a sick fish as soon as I notice a problem. Will stocking it with plants be enough to keep it cycled?

I would think that if you kept an extra cartridge running in your existing tank you could just plug it into the Qtank filter when you need it. the bacteria in the extra filter should cycle the tank instantly.

I'd probably run the qtank filter all the time anyway as if there were fish in it to keep the water moving.

You would have to do a major water change on the qt tank if needed to get rid of the old water. So the suggestion of running some extra filter media or even the whole filter on your existing tank might be the best route to have that bacteria ready to go.
