Question about air pumps

Hi, I have added some plants to my 55 gal. and read somewhere that an air pump with stone will take away the co2 the plants need by agitating the top. So my question is do my fish need the extra oxygen from the air pump? or can i just unhook it? The air makes a 0.5 inch layer of foam on the top of my tank also and is not real pleasant to the eye. Thanks

86 that puppy. Your fish should do fine with the O2 already in the water via the filtration system. Too much turbulance on the water's surface will degass the CO2.
