Question about an Eclipse tank system

I'm wondering on the Eclipse tank systems, since it's all one piece, is it possible to cut some of the plastic hood with a saw or something to add your own filter? I've been offered a used setup for $20 and I'd like to take it, but I'd want to add extra filtration.

Any help or experience is appreciated muchly.
 
Depending on which eclipse hood you've got, while there's not really any modifications to be done other than lighting, you might want to TRY a cannister filter. should be able to get the filtration hoses through the back cutout without much difficulty.
 
I was thinking along the lines of cutting out a rectangular shape to accomadate an existing filter I already own (in addition to the one that is built in). That won't work?
 
you might lessen the integrity of the hood by cutting like that.

The Eclipse Hood actually does a good job.

I had a 29 gal with an Eclipse II on it.

With lighting all in an enclosed, neat/clean looking hood.

what are you keeping/planning to keep in the tank?
 
It's the 12g model and I wanted to keep a single goldfish I have. He has permanent swim bladder problems (he's had them all his life) so he can't move around that well. But I know they're messy and need lots of filtration.
 
I'd say Give the Eclipse a try without midification first to see if it'll keep up with a lone Goldfish...it should do OK without needing the extra push from a HOB filter.
 
You've got the Eclipse System 12, right (combined shallow bowfront acrylic tank with matching hood and lighting)?

The 12 flows a lot of water compared to its smaller siblings (Eclipse 3 and 6), to the tune of 150gph, which should be fine for this single fish...assuming he's not too big of a goldfish. In that case, 12gal would be too small. BTW, my little Eclipse System 3's flow a sedate 35gph.

If you add a canister filter, it had better be a small one, or you'll have a lot of current that the fish, with its problematic swim bladder, may be unable to handle.

I'll second TetraFreak's judgment on this one. Try it solo first.

If you have to get more filtration, use the existing cutout for the light & pump electrical cords to run some U-tubes for inlet and outlet to your selected add'l filtration choice.

$20 is a great price for this.
