i cut it to fit the whole back of the tank including the plastic trim, and i used double-sided tape to stick it on.

you can also cut it precisely to the dimensions of the back glass. apply a thin coat of vegetable oil or vaseline to the glass (outside of the glass, of course). line the bag up along one edge and stick it to the glass. use a plastic scraper like a credit card to go over the whole thing from the center out to get rid of wrinkles and air bubbles. it's not permanent, but it can last years if you don't fuss with it. just don't use too much oil. it has a very deep color and looks good.

i had already set the tank up before i decided to use a background, so it was too late for the stick-on thing.

I went to a crafts/hobby store and found something called "foam sheets". I got two navy blue ones, cut them to form the total heigth and width, taped them together and I have a really nice dark blue background. I tried green ones, but they didn't look too great with the plants. They do have black sheets -- actually they have all colors, even a red that would give any fish a nervous breakdown. By the way, each sheet cost me 99 cents.

Hope this helps.

Emil

Krylon quick-dry navy blue enamel on the outside back of the tank. I just use some 600-grit wet-dry sandpaper on the glass (just enough to put a light haze on the glass) and spray a couple coats.

Clean the glass with a good glass cleaner first to get any oils off (like from sweat, fingertips, etc.). The result? It's almost black, w/ the lightest tinge of blue. I just did this on my son's 10g Betta tank, and it looks wonderful.

I simply used a sheet of black poser board, cut it to size, and taped it on to the back. No problems so far, and it looks great. I'm sure it will fade over time, but it only cost $.79 at my school book store, so I can easily get more for cheap.

I also tried a royal blue poster board, but it didn't look good at all. I went with the black.

I just put one on that is shades of blue. It goes from a very dark blue on the bottom to a deep blue on the top. I have an all black stand and tank so I thought a little color for the background would be better than just a black background.
