Ok, so I have a full grown female foremouth that goes into spawn mode every two weeks. ( when I do my tank water) when I got her I did not get a pair, instead I got her 2 angels, and a ram. ( 29 gallon tank) with in the year I got a 55 gallon tank, took out an angel and the ram and left her in the 29 gallon with the other angel ( those angels were kicking each others butt) so Back to the Firemouth. I went and got 3 fire mouths to grow out to finally give my first firemouth a mate. of the three 1 is a drab fire mouth ( must be female) the other 2 are seriously bright red and beautiful. they grew out well, not fully yet but one is almost there. my question is. if I throw the firemouth who I think is male ( almost full grown and bright red) into the tank with the female will they do well, mate and be happy? Or am I asking for trouble? I did put him in the tank with her, they circled each other, did a dance or two and seem to flare at each other, but nothing like the angels did.
The reason I took him out of the 55 was he was being agressive to the other fish, and I do not want to have to take him to a pet store. How will I know if they start to mate ?
so far things are quiet, the male took over her log which I think is funny, she spends most of her time in there. now she is out and he is in. there is some chasing going on, but not to bad.

she'll probably flare at him and test his strength by lip-locking. you'll probably want to move around the decor to give him a chance at setting up a territory before they become a pair.

if they do become a pair, they will have be the only fish in the tank.
So far not to bad, they are chasing, but not much. I figure soon the angel will have to go, but where :( she is so pretty ( or he) and very big.
I hate to take the angle to the pet store, She is bonded to her tank. But the darn firemouth wanted to spawn so much it was not funny. so we thought a male would be nice for her, it took 10 months to grow one out for her
even then we took a chance no male would ever work. She is a big poop, but this little male seems to be holding her back. She may have met her match.

I removed the male today. she had him backed into a corrner and he would not eat. I put him back in the 55 gallon tank, now he is harassing the other tank mates again.

Did you put both males in with her to let her choose which one she wants to pair off with or just one of those 2?

yea so the tougher male fights him and wins and looks good in front of the girl so she wants him. then the other male recovers

Not really, generally that's how you pair them off, get a few flowerpots or whatever in that tank as hiding places and a minimum of 3 males to 1 female, they'll pair off faster than you'll be able to see any aggression, then just take the other 2 males out.

I bought 3 firemouths for her, not sure which are male or female I just know 2 are very bright red, ( she is to when laying eggs and for days ). I put only one fish in, but could put all three in I guess. Bt I do think 2 of the three I bought for her just paired off. there backing up all the other fish in the tank. looks like a stand off of sorts LOL! I am thinking that firemouth girl is destined to be alone. I have got no more tanks to just do fire mouths for her to pair with.
