Question about changing water

So I'm getting ready to setup my first tank. My question is in regards to using a Python to fill the tank (and also do pwc's) and using Prime to treat the water.

If the water comes straight from the faucet, though the Python and into the tank, how do I treat the water with the Prime? Or is it safe to fill to proper levels and then does directly into the tank?

Most here will tell you to toss enough Prime into the tank to treat its entire volume, then add water. Works well.
 
Forgot to add...

I am on a community well, if that makes any difference. I will be testing the tap when I get home tonight to get some params to see where I'm at.
 
Is the well chlorinated? I use well water, so no chlorine/chloramines, therefore no water conditioner necessary...although a community well may be different than a private one.

Don't really know. How can I tell? And if it's not, is it harmful to dose anyway?

I would imagine there's some controlling body that monitors your water source...I would contact them. And no, if you're using Prime, it won't hurt anything to dose anyway.

It shouldnt hurt anything.....

I dose mine right before I turn the Python to the fill position after I have got my water temp out of the faucet equal to that of the tank. Dose for the total volume of the tank and not just the amount you are replacing.
 
you can tell by running an ammonia test on your tap water or contact your water authority.
