Please don't flame me if you feel this is a stupid question but I have read people talk about their cherry shrimp and I think they are just the coolest, cutest things. So...my question...can I have some with this current stock: 4 discus, 4 GBR, 2 cory cats, 1 oto, 1 firefox, 1 bristlenose pleco, 7 neon tetras, 4 black neon tetras, 6 cherry barbs, 1 betta. They are in a 55g right now but I am changing to a 125g and only plan on putting in more cherry barbs, otos and 2 more GRB. The 55 is heavily planted and the 125 will be as well. Of course if there is a chance the shrimp will get eaten by any of these listed, I will not consider adding them so .. will they be safe with this stock?

the discus will if they can. but that big of a tank and if there are areas so heavily planted that the larger fish can't get in then the cherries will be okay. the baby shrimps are small i've only seen them at about the size of this _ to __ so those ones need either moss to hide in and eat or just thick brush to hide in. and you might want to cover the filter intake if you have one.

i consider them cheap at the price the members are selling them but they do produce rapidly. i could only count around 10 babies from my first females batch but only the ones on the front glass and on the anubias. i don't know if there were more than that, but i'm sure there are.

you could setup a smaller tank just for them to reproduce in and then add them to the 125 once its established and grown in. if you toss them in the 55g and end up tearing it down it might be difficult to find them especially if their colors aren't yet in.

so just get them already. lol

LOL...the discus, although paired up and laying eggs, are still juvs. themselves. They are about 3" at the most. I read that whatever can fit them in their mouths will eat them so the discus was my main concern along with the betta. I would really like to find them at about 1 inch and put them in the 125 before I put the fish I already have in there just so the shrimp can get comfy before the others "move in".

Your discus are small, but so are the shrimp, I'm betting they wont last long. I tried the cherry red shrimp a couple years ago, my discus were a bit larger, in a 125 heavily planted tank and it didnt work. Your discus will love the shrimp!

Fish + Shrimp = Fish and no more shrimp, it is just that symple.

everyone has a spare 10g somewhere. a shrimp only tank is still fun to have and watch.

I started my colony in a 6 gallon and when they started over running the tank just moved them all to the 55. Mostly smaller fish that won't eat the shrimp but I'm sure some of the babies get nibbled up or the feedings keep the population from exploding.

I see a good number of them but its pretty heavily planted. I'm sure there are many I don't see.

I think if I tried any in the 75 they'd be gone by the next morning even with all the hiding spots.

Basically any fish big enough to eat them will. Keep a small colony in a smaller tank and just move over any overabundance to your big tank. Figure if they get eaten its good for the fish.

the GBRs would probably have a go at them to, along with the bristlenose.

if you do end up adding them to the 125, give them plenty of time to establish their little breeding colony (that wont be little for long). start with introducing fish that are smaller and then work to the larger fish as time goes on.

Just got my 10 cherry shrimp and all ten got eaten even by a tetra! I even let them go all the way in the bottom of my 65 gallon near the plants but they wanted to move around and boom! Haha what a shame they looked so cute. One of them was even pregnant and it became an appetizer for my bolivian ram.

it's pretty typical for the cichlids to munch on the shrimp..
amazingly I have a few in an angel tank..I used themfor food since I had some extra.....they are still in the tank hiding in a thick clump of java moss..
