We are finally filling our 72 gallon.....
I have read in the forums that you should add uncooked shrimp to your tank to start the cycling process, I am wondering should I have the sump/refugum running during this process? or just place the shrimp in still water and let it ferment?

i would recomend having the sump and refugium running because that will be part of yoru system. however, if you do not yet have one hooked up but want to cycle the tank with all the live rock and such, that would work out fine. but make sure you dont leave any stagnent water in your sump/fuge if by any chance it is filled but not yet plummed.

Thanks

But it is all hooked up and running. We only have 45 lbs lr in it right now, we will be getting the rest of the rock tomorrow. Everything's running smoothly. The only thing is that the pump in the return part of the sump is farely noisy...arrrggg

What pump do you have???

is it the vibrations of the pump or is it a gurgling noise. if it is a gurgling, we can help you out with that, but we need to know if the return pump or the overflow is gurgling. do you have a durso standpipe style overflow?
also if it is vibrations silicone a piece of foam to the bottom of the pump.

JOJO, the pump is called "quiet one" I'm not at home but I think it's the 900.

Fishiness,
We have a standpipe so it is the pump. We also put LR rubble in the overflow box to get rid of the water fall sound. We put a bunch of polyester batton under it, I think it's just the pump itself thats noisy...

Also we had a big set back last night. We put all the lr in (over 100lbs) in tank and sump, 2 bags of miricle mud. 70lbs of arg sand course and fine. 2 raw shrimp on Sat to start the cycle...

All was going fine for two days and we did multiple tests on the sump and so on...We have a look and see that water is leaking from somewhere!!! Thought it was the P skimmer. Nope it's not, so still looking...**** the bottom of the sump has cracked!!! What a pain in the ***, we had to either take all LR out and drain main tank or knock out the middle brace in the stand and pull it out...The second option worked...

Luckily we found a company to cut a thicker pc of glass today so we can get it put together today...

Not sure what caused it to break, might be uneven floor or the vibrations not sure...hopefully we can remedy it cause I don't want to go through that again...

Just had to vent...

Sorry to hear about the setback Brandy...we dont mind you venting, not at all...lol...let us know when you get the system back up and running again....and you still aint sent some pictures...am waiting !!!!

Good luck second time around...

Niko

We took pics and we were going to post them then had panic mode so we didn't get to. I'll get them posted tonight...

They say everything happens in three's what the heck could go wrong next...Knock on wood!!! Flat tire on Sunday, cracked sump, hmmmm...

Hubby is going to pick up the glass right now, so he's taking the rest of the afternoon to put it back together...Should be good to go tomorrow i guess unless we can speed up the sylicone drying process...It's gonna be a b***h to get the brace back in the stand!

Thanks for the support guys, i'll let you know how things go...

yea i had one of those days yesterday as well....crushed my toe, pump broke, spilled over 10 gallons onto the carpet, and then almost electrocuted my reef and myself when a pump valve snapped off and sprayed water everywhere....lol....
will be waiting for the pics and will be ready to help:)
