Since I live i Florida I have access to a lot of cypress wood when out canoeing the waterways.
I have used this in my koi ponds for years but want to know if they are boiled and cleaned can they
be used in my 60gal. tank? The ones I have now are aged well as they have been in my outdoor koi pond for 15 yrs.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mary

No reason why not. I'd boil it just to avoid importing any aquatic insect larvae (learned that lesson after bringing in fish and plants from summer tubs...found a mayfly in the tank mid-December).

yes, I pressure washed mine then soaked it in bleach water.. then in water for weeks.
it's in several of my tanks.

it's cypress I picked up on my last visit to Florida.

Thanks for the reply, good to know it's OK to use I have some nice pieces.

How long for the tannins to reduce out mine still boiled out a lot of tannin.

it depends on the wood.

I like the tannins ,I keep SA fish..so they like it ;)

Been using cyprus for years. Got it from swampy aka swampwiz aka Curtis years back, In fact at one time I was his best customer in terms of number of pieces in their tanks. I think he is still selling it here http://www.amazonmoosey.com/swampwood1.htm

The one downside is fish and time will make it disappear. Huge pieces acquired ten years ago are mere stubs now. It is a soft wood and all kinds of fish, especially plecos, will consume it.

swampy had a huge outdoor cauldron he gould fit big pieces and tons of small ones and he used a wood fire to boil it. He collected it the wild while dodging a few gators now and then.

OK Thanks for the info. NOW how do I attach a weight to it as it is so buoyant??
I know there is some kind of sealant to attach it to stone. I don't know the name though.
And how long does it have to age before safe to use in tank??

That may work..... will try that first...Thanks
The first time I tried to anchor it with a rock it flew up and almost out of the tank like a cork. :)
