I am getting a 29gal next week...
was wanting to get some dwarf gouramis (after everything is cycled and such)...
Just wanted to know how many to get? What other fish would you suggest with these ? I know its not much info but I will answer any questions thank u :)

Hm...that can be tough. Gouramis are territorial by nature (the males anyway - but females aren't often sold) so often times they will fight.

I would suggest either one or three. One would make an awesome focal point of the tank provide the other fish were smaller (and then, I'm partial to Pearl gouramis - one would look good in your tank too).

If you get three, you'd need quite a bit of plant cover so that they can have their "own" areas and a place to escape from each other. Then, I'd add them on a day that you can be home to supervise them, such as a weekend. That way, you can watch for too much aggression (make sure you can take them back if you get some particularly grouchy ones) and be there before things get too ugly.

I love Neon Blue dwarfs - SO colorful!:)

As for what fish to go with them, I'm a fan of neons or glowlights and cories:)

Harlequin rasboras
scissortail rasboras
cardinals
cherry barbs
rummy noses
yoyo/kuhli loaches

Basically any non aggressive fish works well with gouramis.

Cories or the smaller loaches will be a good choice. Some of the more peaceful tetras can works as well, like neons and silver tips. I have a small school of silver tips in a 20 gallon with 1 chocolate gourami, 1 honey dwarf gourami and 1 fly fox. Everybody is pretty happy, though the fox and honey like to chase each other every so often.

Yup, thats a neon blue. My personal fav. of the dwarfs.

And yes, most cories make out at about 1.5-2" and the loaches wouldn't get much past 4." I'd opt for the cories myself. They're so lively and cute and you can have more of them than the loaches:)

how many cories do u think? I saw some albino cories they were cool looking but the other ones are sooo funky lookin haha.

i been snoopin around this site among others for like 3 months deciding what i want and just kind of absorbing info so i appreciate the help!

also noticed a lot of people like the penguin filter.... if i do some plants in there (yeah i know but i want to try them :)) do u think that is ok?

5-6 is a recommended number. Have you seen panda cories? They're almost too cute for their own good!

Getting back to the dwarf gourami. If you have a good LFS near you they can sometimes get you what you want. That is if you tell them that you want a female neon blue dwarf gourami they should be able to find you one.

I'm not sure they'd be able to find them one even if they did want one...they're not up for sale often because they are "ugly" - theyre very dull and more silver than anything. And most LFS's can only order what they've already got on their lists...

I wouldn't say they were ugly. Also it depends upon how good a LFS really is. I'm just lucky enough that at one of the LFS in my area the owner drives to one of 3 different breeders to get several of the fish species he sells. Another LFS a bit closer is able to order dwarf gourami by sex at the request of a customer. I prefer the first LFS since he will be there at pickup and doesn't always just accept what they have since he knows he can go elsewhere if he needs to to find a healthier looking fish.
