Question about Ick - Again

The last of the four tetras died tonight....

So, now I have a 5 gal tank, which is my isolation tank to hold fish before they go to the 30 gal. tank. It has 10 tsp. of salt diluted in the water, no fish, and it's 80 degrees. (Sigh.) I guess I will leave the light off. It's kinda depressing.

Drats.

Now...run the temp up to 85 and leave it for 8 weeks? Or...?

I was looking so forward to getting those beautiful tetras in the 30 gal. tank. We were just a few days away from the go-ahead (5 wks, 2 days into the 6-wk. hold on them).

HOWEVER...GOOD THING I PUT THEM IN AN ISO TANK, or I could be losing all the fish now. So I will try to look on the bright side.

Thanks for your help and support.

Does anyone have advice about how long I should wait to re-introduce fish into this tank?

It's still running at 82 degrees. I suppose I should do a water change, even though there are no fish. Should I still add in (replacement) salt? And then, how many water changes, and how far should I go in reducing the salt before I bring new fish home?

I was thinking of 25% water changes about once a week for about 6 more weeks, and bringing the temp down to 73-75 before introducing any fish. Will the ich be gone, since there are no fish in the tank?

Thanks!! Mahma

Hello (hello, hello, hello....) Anyone? Someone?

OK - I know you are all sitting with the correct answer, and yet not wanting to show-off, right? But please, I am begging for your expert advice. ;) Please? ;)

Please help me out here...I don't want to accidentally kill another round of fish. Pleeeeeease? ;) I have got to do something with this tank. It's been 8 weeks since the last fish died. I have kept the temp up to 82-84. What next?

Right. There are no ich in the tank now; they can only last a few days without fish. I'd drain and refill with plain good old freshwater.

Salt needs to be added gradually because osmotic shock is an absolute killer.

first off way 2 much salt. for every 5 gallon 1 table spoon leveled is enough. use treat your tank with med for ick it is a blue liquid that you drop drops in tank via directions. tank should be clean after treatment. i hope this was useful info. good luck

Thank you.

You're talking about the water change - just start over - to get the water fresh...but keep the Biowheel? Right?

Or are you talking about cycling the tank from scratch?

(Just 5 gallons of fresh water to get rid of 99% of the salt? Is that right?)

Thanks in advance for clarification. :)

While I realize that the some choose meds and some choose the heat/salt method to deal with ick (ich?) -- once the heat/salt method is chosen, I understand the 2tsp/gal. to be rather typical.

Perhaps, looking back, that this was too much salt given the size of the tank. (The last time I did this, it was in a 30 gal. tank.) Again, there has been disagreement regarding whether the salt should have been scaled back due to tank size.

Nevertheless, the fish are dead. I don't know if the disease killed them or the "treatment." :headshake2:

I am trying to make the best possible decisions from this point forward, which is why I asked for help.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. :)

No fish, so the bacteria are dead. No new equipment needed, but you are starting the tank from scratch.
