Hello everyone!

Every now and then I have noticed that my mysteries will go to the surface and stick their breather tubes out of the water a bit and then start "pumping". I was wondering if this was normal, I've never heard anyone else talk about it so I was just wondering. Is there anything I should be concerned about? The tank gets plenty oxygen in the water, I have plants in there, and there is a good amount of surface aggitation. Also all my parameters are fine and dandy. In fact to be specific, ammo= 0ppm, nitrites=0ppm, and nitrates=0ppm, yes the tank is cycled, I have a decent amount of plants which is why I think my nitrates have gone down to 0. Do snails sometimes need atmospheric oxygen too? This is just something I have been wondering about.

Thanks!

do you have corydoras??? if so do they go to the surface for air from time to time?????

just like corydoras, snails will go to the surface for air.

no cories, but I do have bichirs and ropefish which do the same thing:) I had no idea that mysteries were the same.

thank you everyone

Corys do it for oxygen for their gut. It helps them to digest their food.

I must say the mysteries in my 125 are more interesting to watch than the fish lol. I love it when they glide all the way to the top, decide they don't want to be there anymore then just drop down hitting any fish that may be in the way haha. Also when they just float there, that is VERY interesting! lol

My babies have been parasnailing! It is too funny because they drop like rocks. LOL
