Question about my new live rock

Hello,
I put my cured but shipped live rock in the tank(no fish yet) yesterday. I put my little fluval 104 with the carbon removed(the ceramics and foam are still there) for some circulation until my power head comes in next week. My question is that my rock is alot less colorful today. Is this normal or did I screw up?



P.S. I am going to scrap the bio wheel and fluval and buy a skimmer once the tank is cycled.

I'm not sure what sort of lights you havce but, a lot of times the deep water coralines will fade a little under halides. It's perfectly normal and the sun loving red/green coralines will take over in time. I'd encourage you to be carefull of your photo period until your tank is well broken in or you'll probably get all kinds of green hair algae etc. The coralines don't need much light and would do just fine with just a couple of hours a day for your viewing pleasure.

I wouldn't be to scared about the live rock, Im sure its fine, just let it cycle, everything will grow back, just let it settle in, then get put on the skimmer when it comes in, after that maybe 2 weeks or so, after 2 weeks (w/ the skimmer) test your water, (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate). Also how many lbs of rock did you get? I would say 1 pound per gallon maybe a tiny bit more.
 
I am running about 50 lbs in a 55 gallon tank. My plan is to buy 30 lbs of base rock and 20 lbs of live sand. Hopefully the live will seed the dead rock. I only want 3 small fish for the near term. I got my power head today. Should I be using the venturi tube at any point to inject air?
 
what's the point of the venturi tube?

I've been using the venturi tube and getting lots of bubbles, evaporation and salt creep which is a pain. I just closed it on my power head that is used for circulation. Should I do the same with the one on my plenum?.....My tank is cycled, but I wasn't going to take the tube of my plenum off for a couple more months.
