I have a UGF that always builds up algea in the tubes. I am wanting to remove UGF because its becoming a hassle pulling the tubes out to clean. I wanted to keep the base of the UGF in because didnt want to remove the gravel and redo the tank just to get it out. just wanted some opinions on this because wasnt sure when I did water changes if waste build up would just stay under the base where I couldnt get to it with the gravel vac when cleaning. Thanks for your help.

Have you considerd replacing the clear tubing with pvc? The opaque tubes shouldn't grow algea anywhere near as fast, if at all.
Just a thought. Sorry I don't know the answer to your actual question.

No I never thought about that I will give that a try.I was just wasn't sure if the amonia would build up quicker in the tank because I would leave the bottom plate of the UGF in the aquarium.

If there is a hole in the UGF where your riser tube is, slide a length of air tubing down there and syphon out the gunk.

I wouldn't leave the plate in if you do remove it. It would trap a lot of debris and could cause some toxic air pockets to build up that could harm your fish. It would get really messy really quick and cause some issues for you.

Simple baby bottle brush makes quick cleaning of lift tubes without removing them..
