Hello -

I have a 35 hexagon with 2 angels, 2 guppies, 2 horseface loaches, 2 mickey mouse platies, and a snail. I have heard a few people say that even though it is a freshwater tank, you should add some aquarium salt to it. Is this true?? If so - how much??

Thanks
Nick

WELCOME TO AC :)
Pretty much an urban myth. Some people say it prevents fish from getting sick and improves health but that is just conjecture. Fact is freshwater fish should be kept in freshwater and saltwater fish should be in saltwater. Salt can be used as a treatment for some diseases and parasites but apart from that salt shouldn't be added to a freshwater tank.

Just my opinion.

:iagree: Salt is a waste of time and money unless you have emergency cases.

I always use a bit of salt in my tank. I have a 55gal cichlid tank. When I do water changes, probably about 15-20 gallons per change,,I add a few table spoons to the new water. I read some where one time that it helps ease stress and prevent disease in the fish. I'm not sure if it's working, but I have been doing it for awhile and haven't lost a fish or had a sickness since.

I add 1 TBL to 5 gallons, every time i change water. I have a 55 up with platies mollies gouramis koulis tetras, koi swords. Their color is so much brighter with the addition to salt. And i believe it helps in their health. Been doing it for over 6 months now. And its not expensive. At least not in mn. I got enough to treat 500 gallons for like 2.00 . go ahead and try it see if you think it makes a difference. Just remember to dissolve first.

Is your water hard or soft what type of salts are you thinking of using? IMO it is really not needed in a fresh water setup.

hardness is about 150 gh, alkalinity is about 60KH, nitrate 20, nitirite 0, ammonia 0, and ph is 7.4. I use only RO water in the tank and I have flourite and eco complete with live plants if that makes a difference. The reason that I was asking about the salt was that the guy at the fish store where I bought my angels said that I should add some salt to the tank.
Thanks.
